Acky's XP Breakout from Isotope244 Games

Ok, so my first game review is not for a free game, but I think that this one deserves your attention for two reasons. First, if you are around the same age as me, you grew up playing Breakout, Super Breakout, Arkanoid, or some other version of a similar game. Isotope244 has made a great update of this totally classic arcade game that is definitely worth a download. Get ready for some gaming nostalgia. Second, this great game is available for play on PocketPC and SmartPhone. This is a really under-served market for gamers and deserves more attention from developers.

You can download a demo version of Acky's XP Breakout for the Mac, PC, or PocketPC. The visuals in the game are pleasing, but it is the physics of the game that make it worth playing. Simple breakout mechanics without the flailing paddle problems that have plagued many flash versions of breakout clones. The ball and paddle movement are smooth and have that just right feeling to them. There are numerous power-ups, bonuses, and achievements to unlock in the game. The demo version is only 10 levels long, but the levels are replayable if you want a quick breakout fix.

The full version of the game has over 150 levels if/when you opt for the pay version for $19.95. That is enough content to keep you playing for a good number of hours. Isotope244 offers other interesting games that you might browse or download while you are there.

Why Cheap, Why Now?

The economy being as tight as it is, fellow gamers have been looking for more cheap and free options to stretch their entertainment dollars. The purpose of this blog is to bring you reviews of a number of inexpensive or sometimes free options. Sure there are thousands of free to play flash games out there, but many of them are just average. Good for a few clicks, but quickly lose their luster.

Fortunately for us, there are a few good choices out there that really shine. Without opening your wallet at all, you can manage to get your gaming fix. Whatever genre you are looking for, there are choices for you.

Some of the games I'll review here are available as shareware with downloadable demo versions available. Others are a new breed, optional pay-to-play. The basic game is free to play, but if you want to pony up some money to the developers, you can get in-game enhancements to increase your progress in the game. While this model seems a bit odd at first, there are a couple of games within this space that are worth checking out.
